CONSTRUCTION SEMINARS

GLH One Day Seminar

GLH Building Smart Seminars

Fee or payment required ($50 for one person - $25 for each additional person. Fee includes lunch and all materials.

People who buy a log home like to do their research before they make a purchasing decision. An educated buyer is our best prospect so we offer a variety of educational seminars. Our GLH Building Smart Seminar is the most comprehensive in the log home industry. It covers “Everything you need to know about buying and building a Gastineau Log Home.” The seminar is valuable whether you are just beginning to learn about log homes or you are getting ready to make a purchasing decision. GLH representatives are always on hand to answer questions about your individual projects. Bring your plans for a free plan review and price estimate.

The seminar begins with a Slide Show/Power Point Presentation covering the entire process of planning, buying and building a log home. We cover planning and designing a custom wood home, how to develop a budget and a proper cost estimate of your project, we include the pre-construction process including all the important actions and measures that must take place before you begin to build. The presentation is designed to answer the most often asked log home construction questions. For the construction process slide show we start with a raw piece of land and take you through the entire construction process including site development, delivery of your log package, foundations, log wall erection, installation of doors and windows, electrical and plumbing, roof systems and more.

Next we tour our model home center and show you how to read an estimate and what materials are typically included, or not included in a log package. When you purchase a log package you are buying more than just logs and building materials – you are buying our GLH Smart Log Building System. This includes how we stack our logs, fasten them together, seal them at the horizontal surfaces, corners and butt joints. It includes how we install windows and doors, how we accommodate settling, and basically everything we have learned about building log homes in our 30 years in the log home business.

Some customers use the Building Seminar to determine the role they plan to assume in the construction of their new log home. Some want to be in a hands-on Do-It-Yourself role, others want to be their own General Contractor or take on a construction supervisory role and others simply want to know what is going to be happening throughout the construction process.

Builders also attend the seminar, sometimes by themselves, sometimes with the homeowner to be, to make sure they fully understand the GLH Smart Log Building System. Whether you are a builder or a novice just learning about log homes, you will find the information presented in this seminar to be invaluable.

At the seminars you will have an opportunity to meet senior GLH staff members who will be working with you throughout your project. Stan Buchta, Vice President of Operations, traditionally teaches the hands on portion of the seminar. Stan is our in-house log home guru with 20+ years of hands-on experience. A great teacher and a fountain of log home construction knowledge – Stan’s presentations are always well received and thoroughly enjoyed.

Emad Faddoul, P.E. is Vice President of Engineering and Design for GLH. Emad is a licensed professional engineer with 27 years of engineering and construction experience. Currently he is Chairman of the Technical Committee of the Log Homes Council of the National Association of Home Builders. Emad is available to answer any technical or structural questions you may have. He is also there to review your plans, offer advice, and make suggestions on ways to achieve your dream home floor plan in a cost effective way.

The following topics will be covered at the seminar:

  • How design affects construction and how construction affects design
  • Reading, understanding, and using blueprints
  • Materials list: How to read, understand and control
  • Finding and managing subcontractors
  • Preparing for delivery and taking inventory
  • Job site safety, tools and specialty equipment
  • Basic log handling, log stacking, fastening and job site procedures
  • Installation of doors and windows, electrical and plumbing, stairs and railings
  • Allowing for timber shrinkage and settlement issues the GLH way
  • Framing techniques in log construction
  • Trim and Finishing techniques in a log home

In addition to the classroom presentations, you will gain direct experience as you participate in building a small project employing the basic techniques required for construction of a Gastineau Log Home. Most importantly, come prepared to enjoy yourself. Meet people, just like you, who dream of buying and building a Gastineau oak log home. Share meals, drinks, stories and good camaraderie with the finest people you will ever meet – log home folks.

The seminar begins at our National Model Home Center in central Missouri on I-70 at exit 144 (Hatton exit) between Kingdom City and Columbia, MO. The morning session is classroom style. The afternoon session is more hands on and is held at a special facility (OCB) near our corporate offices in New Bloomfield, MO (off Highway 54) and (about ½ hour south of the model home center.

The cost of the seminar is $50 for the first person and $25 for each additional person. There is no cost to professional builders (see below). We offer a money back guarantee if you are not satisfied with the seminar. If you purchase a log home package from GLH the cost of the seminar is credited as a payment towards your package.

This is an information packed seminar. Space is limited at all our GLH seminars. Be sure to call in advance and reserve a seat. The seminar begins at 8:00 am with coffee and donuts. The actual seminar starts promptly at 8:30 am and ends at 5:00pm. Lunch is provided.

Professional Builder Only Workshops (No charge for builders)

Within our GLH Building Smart Seminar we have a separate track for builders. The builders meet separately for part of the morning session to review issues that are only pertinent to professional builders. (A business card or business letterhead is required to confirm you are an actual builder.)

We train a large number of builders every year. Builders who successfully complete our training program at the GLH Building Smart Seminars may be added to our builder list which we make available to customers who are looking for a builder for their project. Initially they are placed on our “Builder B” list. After they have completed a project they may move up to our (A) builder list. Any builder who receives two or more unresolved complaints from a customer is removed from the builder list.
